Process engineer intern

Got the answers to these questions?

  • Off the top of your head, what’s the least work of separation for 50% recovery of seawater? 1

  • How do osmotic pressure, concentration polarization, and flux develop along the length of a membrane train? 2

  • What do forward osmosis, osmotically-assisted RO, and low-salt rejection RO have in common? 3

If so, we want to hear from you.

Harmony Desalting

At Harmony, we are advancing the state-of-the-art in water treatment using a combination of new processes, membranes, and insights. In doing so, we will help secure clean water for people all around the world.

Since spinning out of MIT in 2021, we have demonstrated our batch RO process in two award-winning field deployments: Reclamation’s More Water Less Concentrate Challenge and the IDEaS Pop Up City Contest. In 2023, we won an Impact Medal at the Global Prize in Desalination.

Over the next year, we are focused on deploying additional pilot demonstrations supported by the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Alliance for Water Innovation, and the Saline Water Conversion Company. Following this next round of pilots, we anticipate selling our first commercial systems in 2025.

Harmony has been totally funded by grants and contests so far.

Your role

As we work to design and build two pilots this summer, you will play a critical role in the development of new water treatment processes and deployment of pilot systems.

Topics of investigation will include the following:

  • Brine concentration via low salt rejection RO: process design and data analysis
  • Robust process control

You may also be expected to assist with engineering activities such as modifying P&IDs and assembling BoMs.

Responsibilities

If you join our tiny team, you can expect to hit the ground running and contribute in many ways.

While much of your work will involve process development and design, you will also be expected to interface with our partners.

Qualifications

Understanding of desalination, membrane processes, and water chemistry is a must.

Strong candidates will be quick learners who can take initiative in forming projects and work well independently.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 2+ years research experience
  • Proficiency in MATLAB
  • Understanding of computational fluid dynamics
  • Field or experimental experience

  2. What if the water recovery is 80% less?↩︎

  3. In which situations would high-pressure RO make more sense?↩︎
